Christmas 2013

Juju entranced by the christmas lights.

The great ice storm of 2013! :-P

Bonding over football! I've found a task that is compatible with football watching!  Feeding and holding babies!

Henry is our elf on a shelf.  Emmy was having trouble listening one day and made the naughty choice of touching him.  Well, Henry immediately became gravely ill, and departed for the north pole as soon as she turned the other way.  He returned the next morning but spent the day nursing himself back to health in Barbie's room.  Last time that choice was made!

We got a gingerbread Christmas village kit at Target.  Lucky for us there were unbroken walls to construct two of the five buildings!  Emmy worked hard to decorate them, and then promptly ate one of them for dessert (while I was detained with cleaning the dishes. :-P)

Making Christmas cookies!!  All of the kiddos got in on the fun this year!  We had so much fun!

Shopping for our adopted "Christmas kid" Ashanti at Target!  The girls got REALLY into it!  Emmy helped pick out her outfit (I signed off on it-Emmy has fashion sense when it comes to color coordination, but she's not afraid of patterns!)  Hannah INSISTED on holding everything.  It was pretty funny. :-P BTW, I ADORE the new cart at Target (that is a singular form of the word, I do believe there is just one at our local store.) They are nearly impossible to come by, but I feel as though it was created for my family!

We hosted the church group Christmas party again this year!  40 adults and kiddos was a new record for us! :)  We had so much fun!  Especially the part where we wrapped up all of the gifts for Ashanti...

Emmy wrote her letter for Santa!

All dressed up to go see Santa at the Opryland Hotel!

Our girls!

Hannah is obsessed with James and Jules is Emmy's little pet...It's pretty funny. :)  Everyone has a buddy!

Different kind of road march for Daddy!

Hannah was reaching for her beloved baboo. :-P

"Woo! Woooooo!"  Hands down, Hannah's very favorite part of the day!

I've got a monkey on my back!

On the 23rd, we went to Toys R Us and divided up into two teams, Mommy, Hannah and James and Daddy, Emmy and Juju.  We let the kids pick out small gifts for eachother, and it was SO MUCH FUN!!  We played it up by staying away from eachother (and being really dramatic if the other team was closing in on us!) to make sure the gifts were a surprise!  This is only going to get more fun as the kiddos get older!

We got back into our teams to wrap the presents!  Team Daddy!

Hannah guarding the door for Team Mommy!

Hannah trying to cheat!

Emmy did a wonderful job wrapping the gifts for Hannah and James!

Sissy put herself on tape duty.

The Saturday before Christmas, we went on a tour de Clarksville to surprise some of the people that matter the most to us with some Christmas cookies!  The kids were so excited!

Who needs a white Christmas when you can have a tornado warning?

My closet has never been more full!

Christmas Eve!  I totally spaced out and thought there was a church service, but instead our church had celebrated the Sunday before...It made for a much less rushed celebration. We had a fancy dinner in very casual clothes (jammies from the night before!)  Here, Emmy took it on herself to make a plate of cookies for Santa and carrot for Rudolph while I was embroiled in baby bath time.

Santa was here!!  He arrived a little after 1 when Mommy and Daddy finished wrapping!

SO excited!  A Cinderella princess dress from Grammy and Poppy!  This has worked it's way into her everyday wear!

Hannah's big gift!  A trampoline!  It has been a hit with every child that has been in our home!

Her beloved Caillou!

Juju with her gift from James and Hannah!

Jamesy boy in his new bumbo!

Gang's all here!

Emmy's big gift from Santa!  She'd asked him for this when she chatted with him at
the Opryland Hotel!

This is how Sissy colors...Sprawled out on the floor.

Happy girl!

Sleepy boy!  Cuddled up with his new Simba toy from Emmy and Juju.

Our friend and babysitter, Ms. Ericka sent me a text when she was out shopping one day with a picture of this doll...I couldn't resist!

So much excitement wears a baby out!

Later Christmas Day: "The Sacksteders are coming! The Sacksteders are coming!!!"

Nick's make-shift command station.

The kids table!

These two are absolutely attached at the hip.

They had a band!

Clairey led the trio into the room and announced to JP that he was their audience.  Nick really got into it. (I stole this from Kris' camera!)

"ought coco" is Sissy's favorite!

Nick makes fun of me for our stroller collection but we were able to seat 5/7 kiddos at our Opryland excursion to go see the Christmas lights!

The Sacksteders! (Courtesy of Kris!)

Us! (Kris, again!)

Us again! (Kris took this one too!)

I hear angels singing!  A picture with everyone looking!!!  Hallejuah!!

Thank you, Kris!

We noticed the girls were outside having a little gab-sesh one morning.

Movie for quiet time!

Sweet Emmy was worn out!

After years of trying, the big kids slept peacefully together!  The key? Books on CD!  They made sure to remind eachother to be quiet so that they could heard the story, and then fell asleep in the process!  Another brilliant idea by my Kris!

Making Jesus' birthday cake!

Celebrating Jesus' birthday at the Andrjeski's house!

Jace and Hailey!

Lauren!

Jakey Wy Wy (in Hannah speak) and Emmy girl!

They're first date! Jace and Hannah!

Collective effort decorating Jesus' cake!

Kris and little miss Maisy Jane!

Jakey goes in for the good stuff, which thoroughly ticks Emmy off.

Hands on Daddies!  Love them!

Children flock to Kris. :)

Brings new meaning to "hot mess."

Lucky for us, Snowmageddon turned into a light dusting.  Emmy's ensemble was lacking!

Kris took a bunch of great pictures...

Emmy's 4!!!

Our Emmy is 4!  She had such a special day spent doing so many things that she loves the most...A tea party for breakfast, wearing her brand new beautiful dress from Mimi and Papa, lunch date with her besties at Chick-Fil-A, watching the latest movie in our collection, The Little Mermaid, phone calls and Skype dates throughout the day, PRESENTS (she waited patiently all day for Daddy to come home!), roses from Daddy and chocolate cake for dessert!  Whew!  What a day!

I don't have official growth stats from a well-check (we got off schedule last year and apparently those appointments must be one year plus one day after the previous one?) so those are forth-coming. Our biggest girl has morphed into quite the little lady, though.  She is such a chatterbox, that I believe a scientific study could show that women use more words than men in a day, and Emmy uses more words than both combined.  I have greater empathy for men now listening to women gab all day!  Emmy's capacity for verbal expression has given us such a special look into all that matters to her, that I took advantage of it by asking her these questions to mark her 4th birthday!

1. How old are you?  "I'm four."
2. Who are your best friends?  "The new girl at school."
3. What is your favorite thing to do? "Wrap presents for Hannah for her birthday."
4. What is your favorite color? "Pink and purple."
5. What is your favorite food? "Saghetti."
6. What do you like to do with your family? "Um, I like to go to Kids N Play."
7. What is your favorite toy? "Um.  My barbies."
8. What do you want to be when you grow up? "A police officer, with a whistle."
9. What makes you happy? "Um, Mama and Dada."
10. What makes you sad? "No." "Nothing makes you sad?" "No."
11. What is your favorite show to watch? "Um. I'm not sure."
12. What is your favorite book? "Um. I'm not sure."
13. What do you love to learn about? "Dragonflies."
14. What was the best part of your birthday?  "Getting my presents when Daddy came home.  That's a lot of fun."
15. Where do you like to go? "Um. Kids N Play!"
16. Who are your teachers? "Ms. Kathleen and Ms. Christy.  Ms. Kathleen has a K in her name."
17. What is your favorite treat? "Fruit snacks"
18. What do you think about before you go to sleep? "Princesses."
19. What is your favorite animal?  "Elephant."
20. Who is your favorite singer? "Clairey!"

Tea for breakfast!

Chick-Fil-A with her buddies!

Watching her new movie after quiet time!

The big moment she had waited long and hard for...PRESENTS!

Christmas Letter 2013

      December 2013

Dear Family & Friends,

We hope that our Christmas wishes find you well!  As this year culminates, we are reflecting on the many blessings bestowed upon us. This year is going down in our history book as being one of our most momentous yet.  Not too terribly long after mailing last year’s Christmas cards, God revealed His mighty sense of humor with us (again) and blessed us with twins, Julia Kristin and James William Durden.  After a tough pregnancy, they were born healthy at 35 weeks on September 4th.  Even as I look at them now, I still feel as though it’s all a dream (or perhaps a hallucination from sleep deprivation.) I can hardly believe it’s true; but we are all overjoyed by their arrival!

In June, Nick assumed command of a company in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.  The opportunity is such an honor to him and he is savoring every moment of this two-year assignment.  The end of June he headed out for a six week deployment to Afghanistan and has since been home and busy with the fielding and new training requirements as his helicopter fleet transitions to a new model. Lucky for me, this training takes time, and he will (barring any unforeseen trouble in the world) be stateside until the spring!

A very astute passerby at Target aptly called me “the young woman who lived in a shoe” (I added the young part.)  I didn’t know whether to applaud her for her unique and witty comment (I get lots) or to take offense for pointing out how ungracefully I manage our four kids under four.  It’s not pretty, but so long as I end the day with everyone safe and fed, I consider it to be a success.  For all the sleepless nights, showerless days and testing of patience, I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so full of joy.

Emmy is nearly four going on fourteen.  She not only looks like Nick but has also inherited his stubborn, I mean, perseverant nature and masterful negotiating skills. (Me: “Go to quiet time for 60 minutes.” Emmy: “How ‘bout 30?” Me: “No.”) She is keen on fashion, legos, reading books, coloring pictures, tea parties, cooking and babies.  She has the most acute maternal instinct of any toddler I know, making her an exemplary biggest sis.

I attribute Hannah’s advanced “terrible twos” to her close observation of Emmy’s every move. Hannah is quick to laugh, is highly dramatic, and doesn’t give an inch to anyone.  I sometimes worry about the other children, all boys, in her class at Mom’s Day Out, should she take issue with them.   Hannah is big on trains (“woo!woo!” she says with a fist pump,) Caillou, animal noises, knock-knock jokes and her “baboos” (stuffed animals.) I’m pretty sure that Nick rushes home from work just to rock Sissy to sleep, because her cuddles are second to none.

Even though she is small in size, Julia has a smile a mile-wide, and shares it with us generously.  I often find her flirting with the ceiling fan, batting her long lashes and boasting her body-shaker giggle.  She is such a happy little sweetheart; rarely does she cry for anything other than a diaper change, a nap or a meal.

Speaking of meals, a friend told me that it looks like I gave birth to James and then, three months later, had Jules.  Our boy is a sturdy little guy, and has been since the womb, consistently measuring in the 95th percentile of singleton babies.  With his burly size, comes the kindest eyes and the sweetest closed-mouth smile.  He stares at me intently for the duration of his feedings, making him the second boy to win over my heart.   God is so good.

Wishing you and your families all the best in 2014!  Merry Christmas!

With Love,

Nick, Ali, Emmy, Hannah, Julia, James, Molly & Darla Horn

Thanksgiving 2013

Thanksgiving 2013 was all about the family time and food and ZERO "frills."  It was awesome. :) Nick had just returned from his two-week work excursion so we were all just excited to have him home for the long weekend!  We started off our holiday with cinnamon rolls, hot cocoa and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.  The girls were absolutely enthralled by the large balloons!  With the rest of my family cozied up on the couch, I got going on my very favorite dinner to cook!  I started strong, but lost my mojo somewhere during the day, and had a trend of over-cooking dishes.  Luckily, though, everything was still edible. :-P  Our local family, the Andrjeski's came over to join us for the main event!

Playtime for little Horns!

Burning off some energy before naptime!  Sissy was all over it!

Daddy hoping to grab a nap when he got home from work...The kids had other plans for him.

Sissy is literally sitting on his face.  She may or may not have had a full diaper.

Emmy was giddy about every aspect of the holiday :)

Watching the parade!

Turkey's goin' in!  Only to come out dry!

All of us grown ups were laughing about the fact that we have a combined total of 8 kids :-P

The baby factories.

4 of our spawn.

Sweet Jace.  He and James will one day start a support group for brothers of three sisters.

J&J Nursery is complete!

I finally hung the last of the pictures on the wall in the bonus room-turned-babies' nursery today!  Just in time, too, I am planning on transitioning them to their room starting with naps tomorrow.  They are doing a great job sleeping during the day and at night they'll usually sleep from 9:30ish until 430ish!  They do tend to wake-up partially and cry just long enough for me to gather feeding supplies before they zonk out again during that stretch.  I think with a little space between us, I might sleep better through those false alarms.  I'm counting down the nights until all of our sleep is reliable and restful, but in the meantime, I'm excited for us to spend time together in their new space...
