Hannah is ONE!

On January 12, we celebrated our sweet Hannah's first birthday!  The goal of the day was to do (or eat) all of Hannah's favorites!  Progressively, throughout the day, I believe she started catching on that something special was going on, judging by the increasing wattage of her smiles!  Her day in pictures:

Sissy woke up to a whole bunch of balloons to play in (I learned from my mistake on Emmy's birthday, and these were positioned downstairs in the living room rather than in her bedroom.)  She loves to crawl around and chase them. :)

So happy!

Since Sissy loves carbs, and raisins, I made cinnamon rolls for breakfast.  She devoured her whole roll (after playing with it on her head and pretending it was a phone first.)

Frosting in the hair called for an early bathtime!  Here she was standing on her own while Nick dried her off!

Wearing her fancy new tutu outfit from Mimi!

After Hannah's very long morning nap and Nick and Emmy returned from Emmy's $5 birthday gift shopping spree, we went to Chick-Fil-A for lunch!

Playing on the slide with Emmy!

Sitting in front of her presents before Emmy tore into them!

Waiting for her cupcake at the Sweetest Batch!

Elmo pizza for dinner!  It look so much more like Elmo before it was cooked and his eyeballs melted.

We fired up our laptops and phones so that Hannah could be serenaded by Grammy, Poppy, Mimi, Auntie Kristi, Clairey, Jacob, Uncle Ben & Uncle Grant via Skype, Facetime & conference call.  It was AWESOME!!! A virtual birthday party minus all the prep and clean-up!! She loved it, and so did we!  So grateful that everyone was available!  We are so blessed that our little girls have such a loving family. :)

Angel Baby

"As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things." (Ecclesiastes 11:5)

We got the most precious, unexpected Christmas gift this year.  A lingering case of nausea prompted me to take a pregnancy test, and, before dawn on Christmas Eve, I learned that I was pregnant.  Overwhelmed with joy and surprise, I wrapped the test to give to Nick.  After I was sure he was good and awake, I presented him with the package.  I wish I could have snapped a photo of the look on his face as he opened his gift.  It was the most genuinely happy smile I think I've ever seen him smile.  From there, we hugged, kissed, high-fived and went on to share the good news with everyone downstairs.  I will never forget how our celebratory cheers were punctuated by Andy's screams as he stepped in my parents' poor, incontinent dog's poop.  It was impossible for us to restrain the laughter.  Once the mess was cleaned, Nick immediately began researching minivans.

The nausea lingered for a couple more days, and I was convinced I was having another Emmy.  Emmy was convinced I was carrying a baby boy, and she had already decided to call him Jacob Ryan after her favored cousin, Jacob Ryan.  Nick was sure I was having multiples given my early onset of symptoms.

We got wrapped up in the holiday festivities, but when there was a quiet moment, my head would start picturing our family of five, and I felt really, really happy about it.

On New Years Eve, it became clear that something wasn't right.  I called Dr. Anderson's nurse, Emily, who told me that to keep monitoring myself but to go to the Emergency Department if things got any worse.  And she told me that she was praying for us.  After a fitful night of sleep, I decided to take another pregnancy test.  I was starting to feel crazy, like I'd made the whole thing up.  It was still positive, but I was really worried about the baby's safety and decided I needed to go to the hospital.

Grateful to have Nick home to care for the girls, I walked into the empty Emergency Department and was seen right away.  After a couple of hours, my blood work results came back.  Everything was normal except for the pregnancy hormone level.  It was too low to be compatible with a 6 week embryo.  They sent me home with orders to have the test redone in two days. Which, as predicted, was even lower than the previous value, indicating that I had miscarried.

Just today Emmy spontaneously asked me if I had a baby in my belly.  I told her not anymore, that the baby had gone to live with God in Heaven.  A few moments later she asked if I was going to have another baby sister.  I told her maybe someday.  Nick followed up by asking her if she wanted a baby brother; she told him that he had already gone to Heaven to be with God.  The peek into her innocent understanding of all this is so heartwarming.

We are at peace, knowing that God is in control.  I look at my two beautiful, healthy babies and have a renewed sense of awe at the miracle of life.  I believe that God protected my heart by allowing this to happen with an unexpected pregnancy, after experiencing two healthy ones.  I can't fathom the heartbreak that comes for those couples who have tried to conceive, only for the precious life they created to be lost.  Not to mention, so far, I've been spared from the physical pain that comes with a miscarriage at an older gestation.

There will be a day that we will be reunited with our sweet baby.  Until then, I rest well knowing that he or she is wrapped securely in the arms of our Lord.

Bye Bye Bobby Day

Nick and I had been prolonging the inevitable day that we would break Emmy of her Bobby habit.  We were quaking in our boots at the thought of the tantrums that would take place the first night she would go to sleep without her lovey.  In search of some excitement for New Year's, we penciled "Bye Bye Bobby Day" in on December 31st.  Nick, luckily, took the lead and assisted Emmy with preparing a box in which to put her bobby stash.  He patiently stood by as she taped construction paper onto it, colored it with crayons and adorned it with floral stickers.  He then helped her address it to Henry, our designated Christmas elf, and carried her and the box to the doorstep where it had been "prearranged" to be left for pick-up.  She followed Nick's lead with a stiff upper lift, and a handful of wimpers as she bid adieu to her beloved Bobbies.  After a quick trip to the bathroom so that I could do her hair, we returned to find that Henry had made the pick-up and the Bobbies were enroute to the North Pole.

Emmy was tearful (so was I) and needed some big hugs, but she composed herself in time to hop in the car to head to Walmart for her reward: the Disney movie, Brave, and a little Merida figurine.  She explained to the kind sales associate that she had just said bye bye to her Bobbies, and was getting a present for being brave.  We headed over to Starbucks to pick up some hot cocoa just for good measure.

Emmy adored the movie and has been infatuated with her new figurine.  She asks for Bobby a few times a day, but is always appeased with the answer that they are safe with Henry and that she is a brave girl for saying goodbye to them.  This obstacle was easier than we expected by orders of magnitude.  If only we could be so pleasantly surprised by every transitional phase!

Our brave girl watching "Brave."

Emmy's 3!!

It's birthday season in the Horn Household!  One of our Emmy's very favorite forms of imaginary play is "throwing birthday parties" for those who she loves the most; so one could understand how thrilled she was to celebrate her own big day!  The night before, we put to good use one of my favorite Pinterest pins and filled Emmy's room with balloons and strung crepe paper from the door frame.  There was a small part of me that wondered if Emmy would be a little freaked out by the balloons if she woke up in the middle of the night.  I later realized that was my intuition speaking to me.  It's usually spot-on.  Emmy woke up at around 5, and was screaming for me.  I ran upstairs to find her on her knees in the middle of the sea of balloons.  After rocking her for a few minutes, her disoriented haze turned into an inquisitive, wakeful state.  I realized as I was saying the words "today is your birthday" that I had just sabotaged my hope for returning to bed.  So, we started off the day with a pre-dawn frolic among the balloons.  Shortly after, our tea party breakfast commenced.  I found the most exquisite little tea set at a local flea market some months ago, and had been chomping at the bit to give it to our girl.  Just as I suspected, she was a fan (and has asked to have tea parties every day for snack since then.)  Emmy opened her presents instead of eating, and was overjoyed to unwrap the Cinderella movie.  As I was clearing dishes, she and Nick were already firing up the DVD player to watch, what I consider to be, the very best of the Disney movies!

Emmy's third birthday fell on a Sunday this year, which was incredibly fortuitous, being that it was an absolute certainty that she would get to see a majority of her friends at church and church group!  She practically skipped into the three year old classroom at Wonder Warehouse that day!  (She is far more brave in social situations than I ever was at her age, or even now.)  After church came lunch and nap, which gave me time to finish up preparations for our church group Christmas party/Birthday Celebration extravaganza!  I shamelessly capitalized on the wonderful fact that so many of our friends were committed to spending the night together for church group and insisted that we host the party!  I love watching the video of everyone singing Emmy Happy Birthday; because it reminds me how very blessed are we to have a choir of people who love our baby girl...

We arrived California just a couple of days later, and were so excited to get the opportunity to give Emmy a party with almost every member of her family!  We understand all too well what a big deal that is, and didn't take a moment for granted.  We did it up right at Emmy's very favorite food establishment, Chuck E. Cheese's. (Emmy believes that all currency was created for the sole purpose of playing games there.)  Everyone, young in age and or in heart, was found with big goofy grins on their faces throughout the soiree.  So fun!!

Emmy's birthday celebration at school just so happened to be the same day Santa's helpers visited!!

I adore how obedient my strong-willed 3 year old looks in this photo!. :-p

After about 10 seconds in the ticket blower, Emmy stepped up to the glass, locked eyes with me, and mouthed "I want to get out." She was trying so hard to be discreet about her discomfort...My lovey.
