One with Nature

Emmy and I took special care in getting ready this morning for our FRG Steering Committee meeting.  We were so lucky to have a Video Tele Conference (VTC) with the chain of command in Afghanistan.  The subject matter of the meeting was of no interest to us, we were most focused on the fact that we were going to see Nick for the first time in almost two months!!! We ran a little long fixing our hair, so we had to hot tail it onto post.  Apparently they decided to move the meeting to a different building and forgot to send me the memo...So I showed up, right on time, to an empty parking lot.  Lovely.  Fortunately there was a kind lady who pointed me in the right direction...Nothing like being fashionably late to a meeting with a bunch of people you don't know.  I was "that girl" who flew in after everyone else and then proceeded to trip all over myself as I attempted to fit my beast of a stroller into a very narrow space.  At least we looked cute, that's all I have to say.

The connection was pretty grainy and delayed, but man was it good to see my Nick. :-) Emmy was on her very best behavior, and only made a handful of quiet attempts to interject her thoughts into the last few minutes of the meeting.  She was so intrigued by everything going on around her.  As a side note, I am very proud to report that our company logged 756.19 miles in our quest to "Walk to Afghanistan" (the goal is 10,644 miles)!  We absolutely CARRIED the whole battalion!  I couldn't help but gloat a little bit.  Unfortunately, Nick got a phone call about an urgent issue not too long after the meeting began and needed to leave for the remainder of the VTC. We were so grateful for the time that we had!

Upon arriving home, I took my canine girls outside to relieve themselves.  I noticed that they were hanging around one of the bushes in my flower bed.  It finally occurred to me that there must be something there...I thought correctly.  There was a big dead rabbit that chose my flower bed as it's final resting place!  (I am very uncomfortable with death.)  After I momentarily freaked out, I did the only logical thing I could think of: I called my sister.  She was there for me when the praying mantis blocked me from gaining entrance into my home, surely she could help me through this crisis as well.  We decide that the best plan of action would be to bury him.  So I grab a shovel and dug a shallow grave (I was wearing flip flops and I don't like to dig).  I raced to the backyard, shimmied the shovel underneath the stiff bunny and then ran as fast as I could back to the hole.  Kris, all the while, was singing "Amazing Grace".  It was a nice touch.  As I was furiously shoveling dirt overtop of the corpse (I didn't want to look at it anymore), my neighbor came over to see what I was doing with the shovel in my gussied-up state.  Apparently I looked a little suspicious.

As I walked back to my garage to ditch the shovel, I noticed two birds were staking out my front door...They've built a nest on my porch light fixture.  I learned very quickly that I am not welcome on my doorstep anymore.  UGG!!  It seems that the word is out among the animal kingdom that I need some company...

I see London, I see France...

  1. HAHAHAHAHA!!! You're just the Snow White of Clarksville! I think that old rabbit (who, no doubt, died eating some lovely dandelions and was happier than he'd ever been) laid his weary bones in your yard on purpose... He had the foresight to know that he'd spend all of eternity in the most beautiful flower bed in the neighborhood... And he must have known that, even in his rigid, bug-eyed, port-mortum state, you would bury him with dignity. Let's just hope that those territorial birds over your door scare all other wildlife away at the same time they're chasing away the UPS man...

  2. Sorry Nick and Ali---the part of the day where you actually get to see eachother was just totally over shadowed by my mental image of Kristin ever-so-seriously singing amazing grace into the phone over the dead bunny. Hysterical. Ali--glad you didn't have to fly solo for that one!!!
