Just Three Words...

STORM ROLLED IN

Last weekend:
You can see the edge of the squall line (the darkest part of the clouds) just over our neighbors' roofs.

This Weekend:

A piece of our neighbor's fence was torn down by the force of the water this picture was taken after it had receded.

I was that girl that the newscaster warns not to stand outside and attempt to take pictures of the approaching weather front. Last weekend, the south was plagued with severe thunderstorms and tornadic activity (I've picked up the lingo from all the weather reports I've been watching :-P).  We were fortunate to avoid a tornado, but there was no shortage of electricity in the air.  There were nearly a dozen mature trees that were split or blown over in our neighborhood.  I actually did take cover in our guest bathroom when I was told to...Molly, Darla, Emmy and I formed a literal dog pile in the bathtub (the safest place in our home).  Darla and Emmy sat patiently on my lap and a bewildered Molly found her perch on my shoulder.  I laughed to myself as I imagined Nick's reaction if he were to walk in and see us...Shortly thereafter, the worst of the storm blew in with a vengeance.  Strong winds, torrential rain, thunder, lightening and inch-diameter pellets of hail were pelted at our little home.  I could barely hear the news blaring in the other room over the noise from the storm raging outside.  After a quick prayer, the weather seemed to subside a bit without any apparent damage.  Thank the Lord.

Nick and I learned our lesson about the appropriate response to tornado warnings just two weeks after I moved to the south as a married woman.  A massive tornado touched down just a couple of miles from our home in Enterprise, Alabama.  It demolished many buildings, to include a large part of the local high school, and killed 8 people.  Us oblivious Californians were on the couch when the twister touched down, Nick was fast asleep and I was engrossed in a movie.  I happened to notice, out of the large sliding glass door next to which we were absentmindedly seated, that it suddenly became very dark and the rain began falling sideways.  It wasn't until Nick returned to work an hour later (he had been on his lunch break) that we learned of the extensive destruction that the storm had left behind.  Nick and I and our good friends Matt and Marin went out to survey the damage...It was heartbreaking.  After inspecting the destroyed structures, we learned that, should we ever find ourselves in a tornado warning, we must take cover in the bathtub of a windowless bathroom.  More often than not, that was all that was left in place on the foundation of the devastated homes.

As I type this, I am listening to the same news station that has been on air since I awoke this morning.  Last night, it was as if a strobe light was positioned outside my bedroom window and the thunder roared readily behind it.  Not long after Miss Emmy's early morning wake up call did I learn that there was a very decent amount of water accumulation in the drainage ditch alongside of our house.  I had to do a double take to realize the the murky red water had risen to where it was level with the rest of our yard.  I estimate that it was about two and a half feet of water.  A few hours later, it had receded without any damage.  What used to be open fields surrounding our subdivision, now appear to be large ponds.  Thankfully none of the homes are in any danger.  It is a very different story in the Nashville metro area, which has suffered greatly from very severe flooding.  The devastation is widespread...The rain has now passed, but it will take quite some time for countless people to recover from mother nature's fury.

The Luck of the Army Wife

It is a known phenomenon that no sooner does your husband deploy, Murphy comes knocking.  What could go wrong, does go wrong.  There are tales ranging from family members falling ill to massive house repairs requiring immediate attention.  So far, I have been able to skate by relatively unscathed...My glove compartment was cleared out by some idiot of a criminal, but aside from my insurance cards and car registration, the fool made off with a whole lot of oil change receipts and restaurant napkins.  Most recently, Emmy spit up on the tracker pad of my new macbook laptop.  Both her timing and aim were impeccable.  After a quick wipe down, a call in to Apple technical support and 24 hours spent inverted and airing out it seems that we are back in business.  Here's hoping that I avoid a trifecta...

The main culprit in my laptop fiasco.

My little ray of sunshine.

It's not easy being cute all the time. :-P

Just Three Words...

TOUGH AS NAILS

Today was Emmy's 4 month well baby check up and I am so excited to share that she is right on target!  She weighed in at 13 lb 3 oz (such a victory for a nursing mommy) which falls in the 37th percentile.  She is 25.5 inches tall, maintaining her place in the 88th percentile, and her head circumference is 41.4 centimeters which falls in the 61st percentile!  She is also right where she should be in the way of developmental milestones.  Dr. Seawell was impressed with her chattiness and assured me that that is something that wont go away. :-p Emmy hasn't shown interest in trying solid foods quite yet (i.e. grabbing for my silverware, salivating while she watches me eat...) so I am going to hold off until she is six months old (or before then if she is seeming eager.)  That is a-ok with me!  Next to come is rolling over--which could happen at any time! She has rolled from her tummy to her back when she gets ticked off enough during tummy time, but it hasn't been a regular occurrence.  We finished off the visit with three separate injections and an oral vaccine...She didn't like any of them, but had a quick recovery time.  After I soothed her, she proceeded to "talk" to me the entire way to the car...retelling her battle story, if you will...It seems we have one tough cookie on our hands. ;-)

Walk To Afghanistan 5K Kick-Off

Today was the kick-off event to an exciting project designed for family members to show support to our deployed soldiers!  Our brigade has challenged the families to collectively walk the distance from the center of Fort Campbell's airfield to Afghanistan--10,644 miles!  Just for fun, there has been a friendly little competition set up between the battalions.  Because the new battalion that we are now attached to is, um, non-participatory, I am considering this to be a competition between our company and other battalions...We are the Free-Lancers!! (Of course I won't be using this new name around any of my superiors because that's a pretty quick way to get myself black listed.) I have been laying down the peer pressure BIG TIME!  So far we have probably about 50 Lancer family members "walking" to Afghanistan!  Team Horn alone has enlisted every eligible participant-Nick's parents and my own are joining the effort! We don't mess around...

Today was our 5K Kick-Off!  It wasn't anything fancy (whenever a car was coming, the person in the back would yell, "CAR!!!") but it was special all the same.  Lots of mommies and strollers out to walk the course.  I had decorated an old t-shirt (I very well might still be high from all the sharpie fumes that had permeated my pores) and stroller to show our team pride! Emmy, as usual, was the model trooper and slept for the duration of the walk...but she woke up with a smile on her face!  How could she not being that it was sunny, with blue skies, a light breeze and the birds were chirping?  I can't think of a better way to start our trek to Afghanistan!

Two minutes in--on the verge of sleep...

We've logged 13.2 miles since Wednesday! Emmy's stroller miles count!

Walking for Daddy!

Girl Meets Bib

Spit happens...Especially if your name Is Emmy Horn.  Her eyes are bigger than her tummy is when it comes to food and more often than not, she over does it...I have tried to avoid covering up her cute outfits with a big old bulky bib, but four (or more) wardrobe changes in one day makes for lots of laundry...I like to think of it as a new accessory :-P...Emmy has found them to be appealing chew toys, I guess that makes it a win-win situation.

One of our friends is a seamstress and made this for Emmy, I'm lovin' the anthropologie-esque style!
