Emmy's 9th Birthday

Emmy's 9th birthday fell on a Sunday this year which also happened to be the closing day of the Nutcracker ballet.  Initially, Emmy was disappointed that she wasn't able to have the day open to celebrate in any way that she wished (it almost caused her to opt out of the show,) but we did our best to make the day special.  We baked up chocolate chip cookies for the entire cast and crew and invited our whole family to come watch.  It turned out that that show was the best one the director had ever seen in her 40 years of directing!!  After dinner, we came home for pizza and cake with our family.  It was a memorable day!

Hannah's teacher, Mrs. Rodrigues, even came to watch!

Nutcracker 2018

The girls' main inspiration for learning ballet was to be in the annual Nutcracker performance put on by the Valley Dance Theatre.  They had seen their babysitter, Cora, dance in the show at the Bankhead Theatre the year before.  They all auditioned and were given roles; Emmy as the lead toy soldier, Hannah as an angel and Julia as the lead Rosebud.  Turns out, they have a shortage of male dancers, so James was able to walk on at Julia's dance partner.  They learned so much about commitment, as we had dance practice every weekend for the duration of the fall and 5 of the 10 shows that we were scheduled to preform in.  I also learned a lot about the rigors of being a stage mom, which is something I never thought I'd be.  We made some sweet friends and some cherished memories, and have such a greater appreciation for what goes into stage productions!

They were so thrilled that audience members wanted to take pictures with them afterwards!
